Protein: How to Actually Feed It

If you feed horses long enough, you'll say some version of this sentence: "I'm feeding all this protein, and the topline still isn't there." The muscle you're riding for doesn't show up, recovery drags, and the bag clearly says "high protein." So you feed more. And nothing changes.

Across a full month of Office Hours, Shana worked through why that happens and what to do instead. The short version is that muscle almost never comes from more protein. It comes from the right protein, fed to the individual horse, inside a diet that actually lets the horse use it. Here's the whole picture.


PART 1: Quality, Not the Number on the Bag

Start with what protein is actually doing. The horse breaks protein down into amino acids, and those amino acids are the real building blocks. They build and repair skeletal muscle, connective tissue, tendons, and ligaments. They build antibodies and immune cells. They run the enzymes and hormones behind digestion and metabolism. And they drive recovery after hard work. A quality protein is doing far more than putting weight on a horse; it's what lets the whole animal build, repair, and bounce back.

Here's the catch. Horses can't make enough of the essential amino acids on their own, and three are "limiting": lysine, methionine, and threonine. Picture a barrel made of wooden slats. If one slat is short, water pours out at that level no matter how tall the others are. Amino acids work the same way: if one limiting amino acid runs short, muscle protein synthesis stalls there, no matter how much total protein you feed.

  • Lysine is the one most often deficient and the primary muscle-builder, driving new muscle fiber, repair, and growth. Alfalfa is a strong natural source.
  • Methionine supports topline, hoof quality, and the body's detox and antioxidant pathways (it's a building block for cysteine and taurine). It's often low in grass-hay diets.
  • Threonine supports muscle plus gut integrity and immune function. It gets overlooked behind the first two, but it matters just as much.

This is why crude protein can mislead you. Crude protein is simply nitrogen times 6.25, an estimate of how much protein is present. It tells you the amount, not the type, so it says nothing about digestibility, absorption, or quality. Two feeds can show the same crude protein percentage and deliver completely different nutrition. As Shana put it: crude protein measures weight, not material. The move is to look past the guaranteed analysis and read the ingredients, so you can see the actual amino acids you're feeding.


PART 2: Where the Good Protein Comes From

Once you're feeding for quality, the source matters.

  • Alfalfa is the richest natural source of lysine, easy to digest, and even helpful for ulcers. The catch: it can be hard on metabolic horses.
  • Grass hay is variable and generally lower in lysine.
  • Soybean meal is the most balanced plant protein and common in performance feeds, but it's inflammatory (high in omega-6) and can be hard on metabolic or sensitive-stomach horses.
  • Canola meal (the meal, not the oil) is a cleaner alternative to soy: a touch lower in lysine but still strong, easily digestible, with a better omega-3 to omega-6 ratio.
  • Legume hays & pellets, plus lupin, flax, and chia, round out the good forage-based options.

Most adult horses need roughly 8 to 15% protein depending on life stage, maintenance on the low end, performance in the middle, and growing or pregnant mares highest. But it's the usable, quality protein that counts, not the number on the tag.


PART 3: Protein Doesn't Work Alone

Even the right amino acids fall short without their supporting cast.

  • Calories: pair protein with enough energy so the horse isn't losing weight while it's trying to build.
  • Vitamin E: the nutrient most often missing in horses off fresh pasture (including all winter). It drives neuromuscular function, and a deficiency can strip topline on its own.
  • Hydration and electrolytes: easy to remember when it's hot, easy to forget in winter when horses drink less than they need.
  • Correct work: topline is built from diet and training together. Good nutrition and proper work go hand in hand; if one is lacking, the other can't do its job.

PART 4: More isn't Better

When a horse looks off, the instinct is to pour on more protein. But once a horse is already getting what it needs, more doesn't build more, the extra is simply processed and passed. And the signs that you've gone past the point of helping can look a lot like a shortfall: inconsistent performance, slow recovery, a weaker immune system, and low-grade inflammation.

Here's the part that clears up the confusion: genuinely overfeeding protein to the point of harm is mainly a young-horse concern, where too much pushes them to grow too fast. In a mature performance horse, it's very hard to overfeed. So the point isn't that protein is dangerous, it's that if you've already increased the protein and the horse still isn't right, more won't fix it. The real issue is somewhere else: protein quality, absorption, or one of the other limiting pieces.


PART 5: How to Read a Feed Bag

Shana's simple read, in order:

  1. Is it actually a high-protein feed? Check the crude protein number as a starting point.
  2. Are the amino acids listed? Look for lysine, threonine, and methionine by name. If they aren't listed, it isn't a well-balanced protein.
  3. Lysine goes first. It's the first limiting amino acid and the first to run short, so it's what a nutritionist balances first. Alfalfa is naturally rich in it.

Two things people miss with ration balancers. First, a balancer only delivers its full nutrition if you feed it at the labeled rate, a quarter scoop of a one-pound serving means a quarter of the nutrition. Second, not every balancer is just vitamins and minerals; many are built to target specific things on top of that. So read the label for what a given balancer is actually designed to do, and feed the individual horse in front of you.


PART 6: When it's NOT the Protein

If the protein and the fat are both right and the horse still has a poor topline or slow recovery, the answer usually isn't more protein, it's whether the horse can actually use what it's getting. That points back to the other "barrels": trace minerals, vitamin E, and especially metabolism and absorption. Supporting the gut so the horse truly utilizes its feed is often the real unlock.

A good rule of thumb from the series: if the whole barn looks off, it's a feed problem. If it's just one horse, it's an individual.


PART 7: The Metabolic & Cushing's Horse

For metabolic and Cushing's horses, a few adjustments matter more than anything on the protein tag.

  • Watch your NSC: On the hay analysis, keep non-structural carbohydrates under 12%, ideally under 10%. A grass-alfalfa mix makes a good, consistent everyday base for these horses.
  • Soak the hay: Soaking pulls sugars out and rinses off allergens and pollutants without hurting the protein or the other minerals, a double win for metabolic horses and on bad-air-quality days. The longer you soak, the more sugar comes out, just don't over-soak to the point of mold.
  • Test for selenium: It's regional, and many areas have low-selenium soil. Ask for the hay analysis that includes trace minerals, then add a vitamin E and selenium supplement if you're low. Selenium has a narrow safety range, so test, don't guess.

PART 8: Zoom Out – Building the Whole Diet

The series closed by putting protein back where it belongs, inside the whole diet, built around the horse.

Forage is the foundation. Feed 1.5 to 2% of body weight in forage as a daily minimum. Even for a horse that needs to lose weight, never drop below 1%; below that, deficiencies set in and it doesn't go well. And test your hay for digestible energy, NSC, protein, and minerals before you balance the diet, so you're filling real gaps instead of guessing. Remember hay changes year to year: drought, heat, overgrazing, and even wildfire smoke all shift the nutrient balance, so last year's test doesn't carry over. If a horse spends a lot of time stalled, slow feeders help mimic natural grazing, keeping forage in front of them without letting them guzzle and gain.

Know your energy sources.

  • Fiber (from hay and pasture) is the safest, most natural energy.
  • Fat is "cool" energy: no excitability, no sugar spikes or crashes, and much safer for metabolic horses.
  • Starch should be used sparingly, but not never. It has a place for horses that need a boost of stamina, endurance, race, and some competition horses, and it's what you're mostly buying in grains.

Balance the minerals and vitamins. Mind your calcium-to-phosphorus ratio and your copper and zinc, and give daily salt. For most horses in normal work, a plain blue salt block or a teaspoon of salt a day covers their baseline sodium and encourages them to drink. That's the salt piece specifically, not a stand-in for full electrolytes when heavy work or heat calls for more. On vitamins, the A/D/E/B complex matters, and vitamin E leads the list: it's the vitamin most often deficient in horses, especially those off pasture. And note that vitamin E drops sharply the moment hay is cut and keeps dropping in storage, so hay you're feeding six months later is lower still. For any horse that isn't on fresh pasture, supplementing vitamin E is almost always worth it.


A QUICK ONE FROM OFFICE HOURS: Concentrate vs. Supplement

A question came up that's worth spelling out. A concentrate is the bagged, ready-to-scoop feed you buy already balanced, your Purina, Triple Crown, ration balancers, low-NSC and performance feeds. A supplement is usually fed for a single purpose: adding fat, filling one gap, targeting one thing. So if you're running a solid forage base and simply want to raise fat without a whole processed grain, a targeted fat source like a rice bran does that job without the extras a full concentrate brings along.


FROM THE BARN: What Ruth Showed

Shana's older performance mare, Ruth, is this whole series in one horse. On a full regimen, amino support, the GI line, and Stacked Fat + E, Ruth actually looked a little skinny at first. That wasn't the feed failing; it was her inflammation coming down. Once the gut settled and the inflammation cleared, they could finally see what Ruth really needed and add the right calories, the right protein, and correct work to bring her topline back. Sometimes the first thing good nutrition reveals isn't muscle, it's what the inflammation was hiding.


THE BOTTOM LINE

Diets aren't static. The chart on the bag and the numbers on your hay analysis are where you start, not where you stop, they're built for an average horse in a perfect world. Feed the quality amino acids your horse can actually use, make sure the calories, vitamin E, minerals, and correct work are there beside them, clear whatever is blocking absorption, and then adjust for the horse in front of you. When something changes, a trailer trip, a jump in workload, a hard winter, that's the moment for one small, targeted change, not a whole rebuild. Trust your baseline, support the horse through it, and be patient.
